“In 2013, I lived in Paris for a semester in college. I was studying at the Mod’Spe International School of Merchandising and the Paris College of Art (formerly Parson’s Paris). There was a point in the trip when I was starting to feel lonely – this particular night I had called my mom a bit homesick and hitting a bit of a rut at this point during my stay. The next day, my best friend Nick and I went for a walk down Rue Saint-Honoré probably around 3 or 4 PM in the afternoon and we both got hungry. None of the restaurants were serving food at this time so we stumbled into a pastry shop called Rotin’s Home. I remember I had this delicious cheesecake and we both had tea. We both noticed that our server had those red high-top Margiela toe boots and we both gave each other a funny look. “As a designer and color lover, every place I visit affects me creatively, professionally, and often personally. The art, people, textiles, street art, and food I experience inform my design work. Last year, I traveled by myself to Mexico City to visit a friend and to explore the city. Three moments from this trip stand out to me the most now. 1)   My visit to Casa Luis Barragán– the rich color palette of pinks, ochre, metallics, touches of blue glass, lots of wood and natural greenery, and the sense of zen that comes from being in such an impeccably designed space. My eyes were dancing for days after. 2)   A vendor selling these multi-color hand knotted bracelets on the street. The geometric rainbow patterns on each one were so mesmerizing to me and my fellow Libra friend that it literally took us both half an hour to choose about a dozen of them. “I moved to Portland from Arkansas in 2012 to launch my clothing line and seek out more creative opportunities with like-minded people. There is such a rare atmosphere of collaboration and encouragement in the Portland arts and fashion community. My collaborations with all the amazing female artists and makers in Portland is truly one of my biggest inspirations and influences. I became the designer-in-residence at a Portland shop called Backtalk, where the owner Katie Freedle exclusively features the work of independent designers. In my year at Backtalk, I was able to develop my line and meet so many amazing collaborators. One of my favorite collaborations was a photo shoot I had at Backtalk using local photographer Hillary Boles for my most recent collection. This collection was inspired by the 1991 arthouse film, A Little Stiff, 1980s Japanese minimalism, and the song, Yama Yama, by the Yamasuki Singers. In fact, I titled the collection Yama Yama. “My time spent in Kenya, Africa as a volunteer changed the way I perceive the world in all aspects of life. A small group of us traveled to the Maasai Mara with Free The Children, an international charity and educational partner that believes in a world where all children are free to achieve their fullest potential, to lend a hand and hopefully create more opportunities for the youth by building a classroom at a local school. During our time there, we also had the pleasure of connecting with the students through activities and sports, as well as some mothers by joining them on their water walks. “Guatemala means the land of eternal Spring. Many artists and intellectuals over the years have found Guatemala and Lake Atitlán in particular to be a source of inspiration. Pablo Neruda wrote many of his moving poems there, Aldous Huxley, author of “Brave New World” once described it as “one of the most beautiful lakes in the world,” and it is said that Antoine de Saint-Exupéry wrote “The Little Prince” there… Since I was a little girl, I was naturally drawn to the local markets to buy Mayan goods. The colors of the Mayan textiles and crafts are so breathtaking that one can only help but be inspired by their beauty. Year after year I would come from Pennsylvania to visit my grandfather at Lake Atitlán. A few years ago, the lake had become contaminated with toxic blue-green algae and I saw children collecting the water to drink. I knew I had to do something to help. “As a rule of thumb, I travel with various scarves wherever I go. Partly aesthetics and partly practicality. I find that a scarf is one of those accessories that can be functional to cover the face from dust, help you along on a bad hair day, and even serve as a blanket or pillow. On the aesthetic side, it’s one of my favorite accessories because it can add an adorning element to any outfit when worn either on the neck, head, or hip/waist as a sash. Visiting Morocco was a real treat because it fueled my love of textiles and scarves. As a designer of scarves, I felt extremely insured to see so many traditional patterns, specifically geometric shapes that are all around the predominately Islamic country. Their aesthetic harmoniously connected with my love of lines and color combinations. “A quick story about how I was able to sleep this well on a plane… I was supposed to be on a flight to Paris the day before but as I went to check in, I was informed that my passport had expired a month ago! So I had to get up at 6AM the next morning to get my passport renewed and stay up until my 9PM flight, which was only half booked. My luck because I was able to sprawl out and not wake up until arriving in Paris the next morning! Yes…True story. Mind you it was the day before the government shutdown of 2013.
