Confessions of a Jetsetter w/ Naomi Jackson

“I spent the summer of 2012 working on my first novel, The Star Side of Bird Hill, in Barbados. While I was there, my days were simple – writing by longhand every morning, eating a mango every day after lunch, watching bad TV at night to give my brain a break. I spent many long afternoons hanging out, reading, and drinking overpriced, but great tasting coffee at Surfers Cafe in Oistins. The cafe is right on the beach and when I was there, I felt the sense of being exactly where I was meant to be. That summer of writing alone in Barbados was made possible by many years of practicing the fine art of enjoying my own company.  An appetite for solitude is an essential quality to cultivate for any writer, and traveling alone has taught me to confront myself when I have nowhere to turn besides more deeply inward. I certainly had plenty of time to wrestle with myself and my work during that summer in Barbados. That said, it’s hard to feel truly …

“Waking up just where you want to be…whether it be in your own bed, on a beach someplace quiet, or next to your favorite person…nothing starts a day better than that feeling…Immediately followed by a good cup of coffee of course! One of my favorite mornings still traces back to Formentera…when the sun was ablaze and the water was just right…” – Megan Southerland   054/100 of #100DaysofConfessions Instagram Project

“Beach hopping in Curaçao! I’ve never had so many turquoise water beaches to choose from — yes this was paradise!! On our last day on the breathtaking island in the Caribbean just off the coast of Venezuela, there sits this island that claims 38 different beaches with sunny skies along the southern and west coasts. We drove our car from beach to beach and took a dive in the crystal clear turquoise waters — so clear I could see colorful fish floating beneath me while I swam. It was one of the sweetest and most epic experiences in my life — nature at its finest! As a multicultural person, half Persian and half Afghan — born in Hungary and raised in Germany and California — I’ve seen and experienced a lot of beautiful cultures and lands. But never have I seen so much of paradise in one place like I witnessed on the island of Curaçao…  My travel tip is to allow yourself to get lost, you’ll be amazed at what you’ll find. With my beach hopping …

“Oh, there are so many, but the one that feels most right now is watching my now-husband act thoroughly bizarre on the beach in the Basque town of Deba last summer… He and I had spent the day bicycling from San Sebastián, with all our clothes for several days on our backs. We had stopped for lunch at the port town of Getaria and eaten goose barnacles and drank Txakoli. Then we stopped at the top of a mountain and ate peaches then promised to meet each other at the bottom of the long descent, at nearly sunset, into Deba. We got the last available room in the hostel in town, ate sheep’s cheese and drank hard cider we’d bought earlier in the day, then walked the few meters to the beach to watch the very end of the day… Pete was terribly jumpy, and kept running off to collect shells, then looking back at me, then running further. I couldn’t figure out why he was so frazzled and odd. Then suddenly, he jogged back …
